An iron curtain has descended across the entirety of the British Chinese population residing in the United Kingdom. On one side stand loyal citizens who embrace British values, respect British traditions, and endeavour wholeheartedly to integrate into British life. On the other stand those who, though resident in Britain, place their ‘Chinese heart’ perpetually above their loyalty and legal obligations to the traditions, values, and way of life of the United Kingdom, above their duties to His Majesty’s Government, and above their honest bonds with local employers, friends, and communities.
As British Chinese ourselves, it is with profound dismay – and with sincere apology – that we observe the latter to constitute the majority of the British Chinese residents in this country. Whether through direct instruction or indirect influence, they operate under the sway of Beijing, exploiting Britain’s commitment to multiculturalism to transform cities such as London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Belfast into overseas bases for the projection of Chinese power. They may appear as Members of Parliament who bear no true allegiance to His Majesty’s Government or the Westminster regime; as Chinese students at Portsmouth Naval Base reporting the movements of the Royal Navy to the Chinese government and its consular apparatus; as employees embedded within the City of London, engaged by British technology firms or financial institutions whilst stealing commercial secrets for the benefit of the Chinese state; or even as intimate companions to senior officials within His Majesty’s Government or the legislature. The decent people of Britain are ill-equipped to resist this all-pervasive, utterly unconscionable infiltration and subversion – particularly because the Chinese government maintains no continuous relationship with its diaspora on British soil, but instead exploits their greater love of China over Britain at critical moments: dormant until needed, then activated swiftly and devastatingly against British national interests.
We are proud to be British citizens – or grateful to live under the protection of His Majesty’s Government, and hopeful that we may one day earn the privilege of full citizenship. Above all, we are proud to regard China unreservedly as a hostile state, and to treat the Greater China ideology that permeates sections of the British Chinese community as enemy propaganda. Yet we recognise plainly that the transgressions committed by some members of our Chinese community must be borne as a shared responsibility by all. Merely discharging one’s civic duties to the nation, the Crown, and one’s neighbours is insufficient to remove the stain that the unchosen label of ‘Chinese’ casts upon those of us who are, in every fibre of our being, loyal British subjects. It is for this reason that we have resolved to establish the British Chinese Allegiance, dedicated to fostering among the British Chinese residents a knowledge, appreciation, and genuine embrace of British history, tradition, and culture; to rooting out the deep-seated tendency within the British Chinese community that many of them identify more strongly with China or other countries of origin than with the United Kingdom; and to strengthening the participation and integration of British Chinese people within British society – so that we may begin, in earnest, to change the reality in which every British Chinese person who loves China more than Britain is regarded, with good reason, as a potential agent of the Chinese state.
We are acutely aware that only British Chinese people ourselves can shoulder the inevitable but false accusations of xenophobia, hostility, and racism that this mission will attract. We are prepared to endure these misguided attacks in the service of the United Kingdom we love, and we regard them as the unavoidable cost of our community’s true integration into British life – our proof, in action rather than in words, of our loyalty to this nation. We call upon all those of British Chinese who love Britain and who consider themselves British to join us: to stand together, to resist the ideological temptation of Chinese nationalism, to demonstrate a loyalty to the United Kingdom that surpasses any attachment to China or to any other country of origin, to protect the nation and the communities we hold dear, and to be reborn – from British Chinese into Chinese British.
